New home, old keys?
When you sell your place, somewhere between booking removalists and deciding where the couch will go, security needs attention.
You do not need to buy an elaborate system. Start with the basics, then work out what suits your new home as you settle in.
The following is security advice to keep in mind during a move:
Sort the locks first
Receiving the keys at settlement does not necessarily tell you who else has a copy. Ask a locksmith about rekeying or replacing external door locks, and check that windows, gates and sheds can be secured properly.
If the property already has an alarm, keypad or smart security equipment, organise a proper handover. Arrange for access codes and account permissions to be updated rather than simply continuing with the previous owner’s setup.
Check the less obvious entrances
The front door of your new place is only part of the picture. Walk around the property and check side access, garage doors and entrances you might not use every day.
Does the side gate latch securely? Can you lock the door between the garage and house? Is the path from your car well lit after dark?
Write down anything that needs attention and prioritise faulty locks or doors before shopping for extras.
Give each device a job
Before choosing cameras, sensors or a video doorbell, think about what you actually need them to do.
Perhaps you want to see who is at the front door, check deliveries or keep an eye on an entrance that is difficult to see from inside.
Ask about installation, internet requirements and ongoing fees before buying. Make sure everyone who needs to use the equipment understands how it works, too.
Review once the boxes are gone
After a few weeks, you will have a clearer picture of your routines. The entrance you expected to use might stay closed, while the side door becomes the household’s main thoroughfare.
Revisit your setup and adjust it to suit how you actually live.
While planning your sale and move, allow room in the budget for locks, small repairs and any equipment you decide you need. You can take your time choosing the extras without leaving the basics until later.
